Where Attention Goes, Energy Flows

HostDaniela Troconis
Duration13 min
TopicAttention · Focus · Prana · Mindfulness

What you focus on shapes your reality — often without you realizing it. This episode is about why your attention is where your energy goes, and what becomes possible when you direct it consciously.

Around 14 years ago, Daniela found herself deeply wanting to become a mother. Suddenly, she started seeing pregnant women everywhere. Nothing had changed in the world. Only her attention had — and her entire perception shifted with it.

The brain processes an overwhelming amount of information every second. Because we can't process everything consciously, the Reticular Activating System — a network of neurons in the brainstem — acts as a gatekeeper. It decides what's important based on what we're focused on, what we value, and what we believe.

Humans also have a negativity bias — an evolutionary tendency to scan for threats. Without awareness, that bias keeps showing us more of what's wrong. But here's the key: we are not powerless observers of our inner world. We are participants. We can choose where to place our attention.

“In Kundalini Yoga, we say: Prana follows attention. Life force moves toward whatever we place our awareness on. If we focus on fear, we energize fear. If we direct attention toward possibility, we begin to cultivate it.”

3 Key Takeaways From This Episode

  • 01 Your brain filters reality based on what you believe. The RAS shows you more of what you're focused on. When you shift your focus, what you perceive changes. This isn't metaphor — it's neuroscience. And it means you can deliberately change your filter.
  • 02 Negativity bias hijacks your attention without you noticing. Humans evolved to scan for threats. Without awareness, that default setting keeps feeding you evidence of what's wrong. Recognizing the pattern is the first step to reclaiming the steering wheel.
  • 03 Attention is a practice, not a talent. What we water grows. A simple 2-minute daily practice — consciously resting your focus on what you want to cultivate — is enough to start shifting the pattern over time.

Kundalini Yoga combines breathwork, movement, meditation, and mantra into a single practice. Unlike more physically focused styles, it works directly with the nervous system and aims to create self-knowledge from the inside out. At Imagine, we teach it free of dogma, as a practical method for real life, not a belief system.

A Personal Story

Around 14 years ago, I was in a moment of my life where I deeply wanted to become a mother. Once that desire became conscious… something interesting happened. Suddenly, I started seeing pregnant women everywhere. In the street. At the supermarket. On the train.

Of course, nothing magical had changed. The number of pregnant women in Barcelona hadn't increased overnight. I had changed. What shifted was my attention — and because of that, my perception followed.

You've probably lived something similar. Maybe you decided to buy a red car, and suddenly, red cars are everywhere. Or you started learning a new language, and now you hear it spoken around you all the time. It's not coincidence — it's a fundamental truth about the way our minds work.

The Science

Our brains are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of information every second. Because we can't process everything consciously, the brain has to filter. One of the key systems responsible for this is called the Reticular Activating System, or RAS — a network of neurons in the brainstem that acts like a gatekeeper for information. Your RAS decides what's important based on what you're focused on, what you value, and what you believe.

This same mechanism is also the reason why negativity can feel so dominant in our minds. Humans have a negativity bias — an evolutionary tendency to pay more attention to threats, dangers, or problems. But today, that bias often means our minds are scanning for what's wrong — and then showing us more of it.

The Kundalini Perspective

In Kundalini Yoga, we say: "Prana follows attention." Prana — life force, energy, vitality — moves toward whatever we place our awareness on. If we continually place our focus on fear, we energize fear. But if we direct our attention toward possibility, compassion, and growth, we begin to cultivate those qualities within and around us.

A Practice

Wherever you are — sitting, standing, walking — take a deep breath in. And exhale gently. Bring to mind one quality, one intention you deeply want to cultivate. Maybe it's patience. Or strength. Or joy. Or courage.

See the word clearly in your mind. And now, with your next breath, imagine your attention — like a beam of warm light — gently resting on that intention. Each inhale, let that focus become a little stronger. Each exhale, let everything else fade into the background.

What you're doing right now is training your mind — signaling to your brain, to your energy, and to life itself: "This matters." And what matters will grow.

Closing

The truth is, we are always practicing something. Whether we mean to or not, we are practicing attention — repeating patterns of focus that shape the way we experience the world. The invitation is to do it consciously.

So this week, notice: Where is your attention going? And more importantly — is it going where you want your life to grow? Because where attention flows… energy follows.
