Kundalini Yoga Glossary
Ajna
The sixth chakra, seated at the brow point, governing intuition, vision and the ability to discern what is true.
Meaning
What Ajna Means
Ajna means command or perception. It's the sixth chakra, located at the forehead, between the eyebrows. Its purpose is insight, intuition and vision, and its identity is aligned with your inner truth.
At the fifth chakra, Vishuddha, the association of chakras with the physical elements ends. The sixth, seventh and eighth chakras have no corresponding gross element, marking a shift from physical transformation to more subtle work. Some sources associate Ajna with light: in its physical sense, light lets us see; in its more subtle sense, it stands for knowledge, and the brighter the light, the more we see.
It is in Ajna that we come to understand our inner truth, and what must be done to live by it, recognizing what is true in our circumstances and in the people around us.
In Practice
How It’s Used
Ajna is worked through meditating at the third eye, or brow point, chanting, Archer Pose, Whistle Breaths, Yoga Mudra, and exercises where the forehead rests on the floor. Kirtan Kriya is also associated with this center. Its Bij Mantra is Om.
Ajna refers to vision in two senses: the capacity to discern what is true from what is not, and the capacity to envision, to see what isn't yet there. The clearer that envisioning, the more possible its materialization in the world.
