The Truth About Holiday Stress: Part 1

HostPedro Misle
Duration13 min
TopicHoliday Stress · Family Dynamics · Psychology · Wellbeing

There is nothing wrong with you if the holidays feel heavy. Most of us carry more into that room than anyone can see from the outside.

Lights go up, calendars fill, expectations rise — and for many of us, something else rises too. A familiar tension. A tightening in the chest before we even walk through the door. This episode is about that feeling: where it comes from, why it's so universal, and why understanding it is the first step toward anything better.

Pedro opens with research most people find quietly validating: stress rises during the Christmas holidays across different countries, age groups, and social contexts — and family gatherings are consistently among the main stressors. Not a personal failure. Not a sign something is wrong with you or your family. A human pattern that shows up in the data, and in most of our living rooms.

Three reasons explain it with particular clarity. First, the pressure to perform emotions — to be joyful, grateful, patient, and harmonious on cue — creates internal tension even before anything difficult happens. Studies on emotional performance show increased anxiety when we're asked to feel something we're not feeling. Second, old relational roles return the moment we walk into a family home. The peacemaker, the invisible one, the responsible one — the nervous system recognizes these patterns faster than logic can intervene. Third, logistical overload depletes us before the gathering even begins. When we arrive already empty, everything feels harder. Students at the Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training in Lugano often recognize this moment — the realization that what they thought was the problem was actually the symptom.

Part 1 offers no tools — that's Part 2. What it offers is rarer: permission to stop explaining away what's real. The yogic path begins with awareness, not judgment. And awareness can only start when we stop pretending the difficulty isn't there.

“Yoga is not about escaping from life. Yoga is about life. It's how we breathe through what is real, not what is ideal.”

3 Key Takeaways From This Episode

  • 01 Family stress at the holidays is universal, not personal. Research from multiple countries consistently shows stress peaks during the holiday season, with family gatherings as a primary driver. Knowing this doesn't make it easier — but it removes the shame of thinking something is uniquely wrong with you or your family.
  • 02 Emotional performance costs us before the first argument. The pressure to be joyful, patient, and harmonious on cue disconnects us from our actual experience. Studies show that when we force emotions, anxiety increases and enjoyment drops. The script of how we're "supposed" to feel may be causing as much stress as the gatherings themselves.
  • 03 Your nervous system is faster than your personal growth. Years of therapy, meditation, and inner work don't always win against the speed of a familiar tone of voice or an old family role. This is physiology, not failure — and understanding it changes everything about how we approach the season.

Kundalini Yoga combines breathwork, movement, meditation, and mantra into a single practice. This is the first of a two-part series on holiday stress and family dynamics. Pedro draws on research and Kundalini Yoga wisdom to explore three reasons family gatherings can feel overwhelming — emotional performance pressure, old relational roles, and logistical overload. It's for anyone who has felt the gap between what the holidays are "supposed to feel like" and what they actually feel like. Part 2 follows with practical tools and specific Kundalini practices. The capacity to hold complexity with awareness rather than judgment is exactly what the 200h Kundalini Yoga Teacher Training at Imagine Yoga Academy in Geneva, Zürich, and Lugano develops over nine months.

Why Holiday Stress Is Universal

Today we're beginning a conversation that is so relevant, so universal, and so emotionally charged that it deserves two full episodes. Holidays are arriving, lights are going up, calendars are filling up, and expectations are rising. And while the world tells us this season should be magical, the truth is that many of us feel something very different. We feel tension, pressure, and yes, something called family stress.

Yoga is not about escaping from life. Yoga is about life. It's how we breathe through what is real, not what is ideal.

Research from around the world — studying different countries, different social contexts, different ages and origins — shows the same thing. Stress rises during the Christmas holidays and family gatherings are one of the main stressors. If statistics are right, you're having an aha moment right now. But we should be asking ourselves why.

The Pressure to Perform Emotions

The first reason is high expectations and the pressure to perform. The holidays come with an unspoken script. Be joyful, be grateful, be patient, be harmonious, make it perfect, don't disturb the atmosphere. But when we enter any place with the pressure to have certain specific emotions, we disconnect from our truth.

Many studies show that emotional performance increases anxiety and decreases enjoyment. When we force ourselves to be in a certain way, the body generates tension, the breath gets shorter, and the nervous system is triggered into an alert state. Perhaps what we believe is expected from us is what causes the stress even more than any specific situation with our family.

Old Dynamics and Unresolved Tensions

The second reason is old dynamics and unresolved tensions — the unspoken things that keep appearing until someone addresses them. Families are emotional ecosystems. They are complex, layered, full of history. You can spend years working on yourself, expanding, healing, transforming. And still the moment you walk into your family home, an old tone of voice or a familiar comment can reactivate a wound.

Research in family psychology shows how quickly old roles come back — the peacemaker, the rebel, the responsible one, the invisible one. These roles pop up not because we haven't grown, but because the system tries to reorganize itself in the way it's familiar to it. Even small unresolved tensions can come back quietly and completely get you out of your center.

The Weight of Overload

The third reason is less romantic but very true: the overload. Too much to do, too little space for ourselves. The holidays ask us to cook, plan, organize, travel, host, buy, coordinate, remember, and carry. Logistical overload is a major predictor of emotional fatigue. When we are stretched too thin, we can't regulate as well. We can't breathe as deeply. We can't meet complexity with softness.

Kundalini Yoga teaches us that the first step of any healing is awareness, not judgment. If we understand why family meetings trigger us, we can meet the season with more compassion, more clarity, and more inner stability. In Part 2, I will share practical psychological tools and three powerful Kundalini practices that you can use.

But today, all I want is this moment with you — a pause, an inhale, an exhale, and a recognition that if holidays feel complicated for you, you're not alone and there is absolutely nothing wrong with you.
