Kundalini Yoga Glossary
Chitta
The aspect of mind in constant change, sometimes called the Universal Mind.
Meaning
What Chitta Means
According to Patanjali, the mind divides into four areas: Manas, the lower mind of the senses and reactions; Ahangkar, the ego; Buddhi, the mind that rationalizes, made up of memory, intellect and the subconscious; and Chitta, the aspects of mind susceptible to constant change. Chitta is also referred to more broadly as the Universal Mind.
In Practice
How It’s Used
The work of a yogi is to quiet the mind's constant dispersion, in order to reach a clear perception of what is true and what is not. Patanjali doesn't attribute this dispersion, or the suffering that follows it, to an angry god or original sin, but simply to ignorance. Through clarity and intuition, the mind can be tuned and gradually transcend that suffering.
