Higher Self
The reference point the Neutral Mind uses to judge the Positive and Negative Mind.
Meaning
What the Higher Self Means
The Neutral Mind observes the actions of the Positive and Negative Mind and judges both in terms of the Higher Self. It looks for a higher purpose, asking whether an action has real meaning, rather than only whether it brings pleasure or avoids danger.
In deeper states of practice, the Higher Self is described as manifesting in every thought, feeling and cell of the body: kindness, compassion and character become the way it shows up, rather than an idea held separately from daily life.
In Practice
How It’s Used
Choosing to act from the Higher Self, rather than from the habits of ego or personality, is described as what makes a daily Sadhana practice feel like something to look forward to rather than an obligation.
One meditation instruction puts it directly: call on the Higher Self and keep going steadily through all barriers, chanting Wha-hay gu-roo in a slow, almost suspended breath.
