Meaning

What Third Eye Point Means

The Third Eye Point is a Drishti, one of the places used to focus the eyes during meditation and asana practice, chosen depending on which parts of the brain and meridians should be stimulated. Focusing the gaze on a single point develops concentration and lets energy center in one direction, rather than scattering as it does when the eyes move from side to side.

The Third Eye Point sits at the eyebrow point, the root of the nose, with the eyes rising gently toward it. This focus is also known as Shambavi Mudra.

In Practice

How It’s Used

Focusing at the Third Eye Point stimulates Sushumna, the central nervous channel, which in turn stimulates the pituitary gland and develops intuition.

It is one of several common Drishtis used across Kundalini Yoga practice, alongside focusing at the tip of the nose, the lunar point at the chin, the crown chakra, or keeping the eyes nine-tenths closed; each is chosen for a different effect on concentration and the nervous system.
