Meaning

What Diaphragm Lock Means

The Diaphragm Lock, Uddiyana Bandha, is one of the three main Bandhas, alongside Mula Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha. In the 200-hour Teacher Training, the primary focus stays on the first two, but the Diaphragm Lock has its own specific use: it's applied only once a practitioner is comfortable holding the breath out, Bahya Kumbhaka.

In Practice

How It’s Used

Mula Bandha and Jalandhara Bandha are applied to direct pranic energy properly through the central channel, and Uddiyana Bandha is added on top only when the breath hold out feels comfortable. Holding the breath out with the Diaphragm Lock applied creates a more contemplative effect, one that can be practiced any time of day, even after eating. Holding the breath out without it applied is more energizing, and should only be done on an empty stomach, for a limited number of repetitions.

Whichever version is used, this practice helps fuse Prana and Apana, opening what's described as the door of the neutral mind, and supports the nervous system in finding balance between its sympathetic and parasympathetic sides.
