Kundalini Yoga Glossary
Wahe Guru
A Gurmukhi exclamation of ecstasy, chanted alone or within longer Kundalini Yoga mantras.
Meaning
What Wahe Guru Means
Wahe Guru is a Gurmukhi expression, often described as an untranslatable exclamation of ecstasy, close to an amazed wow. The word Guru is built from two roots: Gu, meaning darkness, and Ru, meaning light, so Guru names the inner teacher who brings a person from darkness to light.
Put together, Wahe Guru points to the ecstatic recognition of that inner teacher, the moment of wonder at the wisdom that moves someone toward clarity.
In Practice
How It’s Used
Wahe Guru appears throughout Kundalini Yoga, both as its own repeated mantra and as part of longer ones, including the Adi Shakti Mantra, Sat Nam Wahe Guru, and the Guru Ram Das mantra.
The manual describes a state it calls Ang Sung Wahe Guru: Ang, meaning a part of you, and Sung, meaning every, so that every part of a person vibrates as one in a merger of ecstatic consciousness. Chanting Wahe Guru, on its own or within a longer mantra, is the practice that moves a student toward that state.
